in 1971, caring people like you have been sponsors for its children. Many have asked the
question, "What is a sponsor?" The answer is simple. A sponsor is a person who
is committed to helping meet the needs of an individual child at New Horizons through
financial support and a personal relationship if possible. The children of New Horizons have the same basic needs as all children, including clothing and personal hygiene items. It is important for the development of children’s self-esteem to have clothes that fit properly and look nice. Your sponsorship provides for a fresh start with back-to-school clothes and clothes appropriate for the changing seasons. Special emphasis is also placed on proper hygiene and grooming. Often children come to New Horizons not knowing how to brush their teeth or comb their hair. Your help will provide the tools and knowledge they need to develop good habits. A child’s room is the one place they can call their own. At New Horizons, children learn the importance of a clean and tidy room. They are taught to make their own bed and keep their belongings neat. Boys and girls can take pride in their rooms because your sponsorship provides them with bedding that is cozy and fits their unique personality. There are many exciting special events in which the children at New Horizons take part. They go to football games, on camp-outs, take swimming lessons, and visit their families. They also take special trips to places such as Six Flags, Enchanted Rock, Fort Davis, Texas Rangers baseball games, Sea World, San Antonio Zoo, and Schlitterbahn. It is an added bonus for these kids to have a little spending money in their pockets. Your sponsorship will allow a child to have $5 a week allowance, which is earned based on weekly goals, school support, and good behavior. Birthdays and holidays are a joyful time for most of us, but for the children of New Horizons they are often filled with painful memories. The sponsorship program is a chance to provide these boys and girls with some good memories of warmth and happiness. In addition to receiving gifts on their own special days, the children are given $25 to purchase a gift for someone important to them, whether it be family, friend, or favorite staff member. Through your sponsorship gift to them, they learn the joy of giving to others. When you choose to sponsor a child at New Horizons, the childcare staff and therapists look at which individual child would benefit most from your sponsorship. Then there are many ways in which you can be involved. Some sponsors enjoy visiting their child, while others correspond through letters. There are also sponsors who, because of busy schedules, are unable to realistically commit to a personal relationship with their sponsor child. New Horizons understands and respects your wishes. It is important for both you and the child to be comfortable with how you choose to be involved. Just knowing that someone cares enough to see that their needs are met makes the children feel special. One of the most important things we can instill in our children about life is that it is meant to be lived and does not have to be just about pain and suffering. By sponsoring a boy or girl at New Horizons, you are giving them a new start on life and helping them begin making good memories. |
